How to Write a Mission Statement

Whether you have a small business or are simply operating as a personal brand, a mission statement is a crucial sequence of one to three sentences any brand needs to have. This statement is often the first written impression potential clients/followers have of your brand. Given that, it needs to be a clear, concise, and compelling briefing detailing the important points you’d like the rest of the world to take note of about your business. Your Mission Statement should answer the following:

Who

At the start of the mission statement you should introduce who you are.

Ex. “Our mission at Apples from Alice is…”

Also, reference your target audience.

Ex. “Our mission at Apples from Alice is to provide apple lovers with the highest quality apples.”

What

Address what you do/what your services provides.

Ex. “Our mission at Apples from Alice is to provide apple lovers with the highest quality apples. Through our online catalogue and personalized delivery service, we aim to make enjoying your local organic gems of the orchard effortless and accessible.”

Include points of differentiation. What sets you apart?

Ex. “Our mission at Apples from Alice is to provide apple lovers with the highest quality apples. Through our online catalogue and personalized delivery service, we aim to make enjoying your local organic gems of the orchard effortless and accessible.”

Why

Give insight as to why what you are providing is important or valuable. This can be done subtly.

Ex. “Our mission at Apples from Alice is to provide apple lovers with the highest quality apples. Through our online catalogue and personalized delivery service, we aim to make enjoying your local organic gems of the orchard effortless and accessible. ”

How

Let your potential client/follower know how you will provide this service.

Ex. “Our mission at Apples from Alice is to provide apple lovers with the highest quality apples. Through our online catalogue and personalized delivery service, we aim to make enjoying your local organic gems of the orchard effortless and accessible. ”

In a nutshell should answer...

Who are you?
Who is your audience?
What do you do/what service will you provide?
What makes you unique/what is your point of differentiation?
Why is what you provide valuable/important?
How will you provide your service?

Important Points

  • 1-3 sentences in length
  • Clear and concise (fluff-free zone!)
  • Know your audience
  • Don’t be afraid to add voice & personality
  • Believe in what you’re stating!
